A weekend workshop with Ronan McLoughlin
2pm – 7pm, 13-14 May, 2017
Poi technique from exploring the basic elements and creating a solid foundation to more advanced patterns, concepts and theory, and the route to get there.
Learn everything faster and easier!
Movement exercises and techniques to open possibilities, find freedom and add a whole other layer of texture to your spinning and dance.
Day 1 – Foundations of Poi:
The more solid the foundation the easier it is to build upon.
This class is useful for all levels, giving beginners an introduction to the base concepts and techniques of poi spinning and how they can go about building a solid foundation while at the same time bringing more advanced students back to the basics, searching for gaps in their technique and pushing them to master a solid foundation.
This workshop includes:
– an introduction to Learning to Learn, mind training and learning – overcoming blockages, honing our attention and optimizing the system that we act from.
– in depth study of the foundations of poi including planes and plane control, timing and direction, circles, figures of 8s and weaves, turning and finding the freedom to move, along with the search for complete control and ultimate freedom while playing with infinity
Day 2 – Into the Depths of Poi:
In this workshop we look beyond the basics towards more complex techniques and theory. Each topic will begin with introduction to the basic elements and continue towards more advanced explorations such as isolations, stalls, pendulums, flowers and manipulation.
We will also explore movement techniques and theory taking inspiration from all kinds of disciplines and artforms that I have come across on my journey, from contemporary dance, to mime, popping, waving to martial arts and tai chi. Designed to give people new tools, techniques and possibilities on where their movement can take them.

BIO:
Ronan is a world renowned fire and object manipulation artist from Ireland. Best known for his innovative style of poi spinning, Ronan has been teaching and performing all over the world for over 15 years. He has been invited to teach and perform at the biggest fire and flow festivals on the planet such as the European Juggling Convention, Firedrums and Kiev Fire Festival, as well as countless other juggling conventions, circus, art and music festivals.
Taking inspiration from other juggling and object manipulation arts, as well as movement and mind/body awareness disciplines such as tai chi and meditation alongside illusion based dance he has developed his own unique style of movement and performance.
As Ronan began to explore these skills more deeply he became fascinated with how we learn and how to learn more efficiently. Over the past few years he has shared the ideas, experiences and techniques on learning that he has acquired through teaching and facilitating Learning to Learn workshops and talks (including a talk at TEDx).
Seeing the positive effects of these arts on all ages has inspired Ronan to continue to explore these arts and to share these amazing tools, techniques and skills far and wide.
