When you watch a group perform that is really in sync, it can seem like they have one brain and many brains at the same time. The individuals are able to follow their own impulses, yet the group supports every action that happens on stage. There seems to be no leader and many leaders. Continue reading “Collective Play”

The Neutral Mask

3 days of mask work with Peter Sweet
9-11 July, 2021
Wilhelminenhofstr 91, 12459 Berlin

There are three masks: the one we think we are, the one we really are, and the one we have in common. – Jacques Lecoq (1921 – 1999)

What happens when you put on a mask that is “neutral”, that has no character at all?

A neutral mask is never neutral when it sits on the face of the player. Since it does not contain a dramatic facial expression, it acts like a magnifying glass for the inherent dramatic expression that is present in your own body. Continue reading “The Neutral Mask”

Larval Masks – Francesco Procopio

Mask Theatre Workshop with Francesco Procopio
05-06 December, 2020
Wilhelminenhofstr 91, 12459 Berlin

The aim of this workshop is to provide a basic knowledge of mask and movement theatre through an exploration of larval masks. Larval masks feature prominently in the Carnival traditions of Basel, Switzerland. First used in actor training by Jacques Lecoq, these masks represent semi-formed beings that are naive, curious and vulnerable. Originally very colourful, Lecoq decided to modify the masks, making them plain in colour and design. This simplicity allows actors to embody psychologically complex states, inviting them to ‘complete’ the mask using the movements of their own body.
